At St Michael’s we recognise the vital contribution of physical education to a child’s physical, cognitive, social and emotional development as well as the role it can play in a child’s spiritual, moral and cultural development. We aim to provide a broad and balanced PE curriculum to aid children’s increasing self-confidence in their ability to manage themselves and their bodies within a variety of movement situations. Through a balance of individual, paired and group activities, we aim to cater for the different strengths, needs and preferences of each child, using differentiated activities where appropriate.
We believe that through the variety of opportunities that PE offers, children can develop a sense of personal achievement, fair play, teamwork and an understanding of the ways in which sport can transcend social and cultural boundaries. We plan a range of activities that aim to provide children with a broad base of movement knowledge, skills and understanding, which they can refine and expand throughout their primary school years.
We encourage children to develop their creative and expressive abilities, through improvisation and problem-solving. Children are taught to appreciate the importance of a healthy and fit body, and begin to understand those factors which affect health and fitness. Through the Government Funding for sport, where possible, the school will provide opportunities for pupils to work with PE specialists. The funding will support PE training by providing opportunities for teachers to work alongside specialist teachers.
Purpose of funding:
Schools must spend the additional funding on improving their provision of PE and sport, but they will have the freedom to choose how they do this.
All pupils leaving primary school physically literate and with the knowledge, skills and motivation necessary to equip them for a healthy lifestyle and lifelong participation in physical activity and sport.
To achieve self-sustaining improvement in the quality of PE and sport in primary schools.
We would expect indicators of such improvement to include:
The engagement of all pupils in regular physical activity – kick-starting healthy active lifestyles
The profile of PE and sport being raised across the school as a tool for whole school improvement
Increased confidence, knowledge and skills of all staff in teaching PE and sport
Broader experience of a range of sports and activities offered to all pupils
Increased participation in competitive sport
At St Michael’s we aim to use this money to create a sustainable curriculum for all children. Therefore some of the money provided by the funding will be invested in the professional development of staff through the observation of coaches. As a result, this should enhance the quality of teaching for all children. New planning and resourcing has been implemented to create a consistent approach to teaching P.E. across the school. As a result, the quality of children’s learning and development should be improved.
